Booking choice: The budget private Giza tour, from $12 per person. Check dates Tour details
You don't need a tour to see the Giza pyramids. An Uber from downtown costs about 150 to 300 EGP, the ticket is 700 EGP by card, and since 2025 free electric shuttles carry you around a plateau that private cars can no longer drive onto.
What you give up is a guide's context, a car that waits and someone to deal with the touts. What you skip is the shopping stops many tours slip in. Here is the do-it-yourself route, and an honest look at what a $12 to $40 guide adds.
The quick answer
Take Uber, Careem or inDrive to the Grand Gate visitor centre on the Fayoum road or to the Sphinx entrance (about 150 to 300 EGP, 40 to 60 minutes). Pay the 700 EGP ticket by card or buy it on egymonuments.com, then use the free shuttle loop. Arrive at 07:00, avoid Fridays, and ignore anyone who stops you before the ticket office. A budget private guide costs about the same as the taxi plus ticket and handles all of that for you.
Can you visit the Giza pyramids without a tour?
Yes, and it is straightforward. You need a ride to the gate, a bank card for the ticket and about three to four hours.
The 2025 overhaul helped independent visitors most. Cars stop at the visitor centre, the shuttle does the long distances, and many of the hawkers who used to work the roads between the pyramids have gone. There are information panels at the main sights, and the visitor centre has an exhibition hall and a short film.
What it doesn't give you is explanation. Without a guide, the pyramids are very big piles of stone with a sign. Read up first, or download an audio guide, and you'll get far more out of the morning.
How do you get to the Giza pyramids by Uber?
Uber, Careem and inDrive all work. From downtown Cairo expect about 150 to 300 EGP (about $3 to $6) and 40 to 60 minutes, longer at rush hour.
Set the destination to the Grand Gate visitor centre on the Fayoum road, or to the Sphinx entrance in Nazlet el-Semman. Private cars can't drive onto the plateau any more, so the driver drops you at the gate. For the return, the visitor centre is the easier pickup point; the Sphinx side is crowded with taxis and touts.
There is no metro yet. Line 4, with a station for the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, isn't due to open its first phase before 2028. Giza is about 20 km from Tahrir, so a taxi beats any bus combination for a first visit.

Which Giza entrance should you use?
The main visitor centre on the Fayoum road for parking, shuttles and a gentler arrival. The Sphinx gate if you want the Sphinx first at 07:00.
The new main entrance opened as a pilot on 10 April 2025 on the south side of the plateau, with parking for more than 1,200 cars and 200 buses, as Euronews reported. It replaced the old entrance by the Marriott Mena House, which no longer sells tickets. Naguib Sawiris, whose Orascom group runs the scheme with the government, defended it bluntly: "The well-being of the public and preservation of this treasure is far more important than catering to the interests of 2,000 individuals."
The second entrance is the Sphinx gate on the east side. It is closer to central Cairo by road and puts you at the Sphinx straight away, but the street outside is where the touts work hardest. The full rundown is in our post on the new entrance and shuttles.
Not keen on taxis and touts? A private guide and car from $12, with an option that adds tickets, an interior and lunch.
Check dates for the budget private Giza tourHow do the shuttle buses on the plateau work?
Free with your ticket. More than 45 electric buses loop about every 5 minutes between the visitor centre, the Panorama, Menkaure, Khafre and the Sphinx.
Hop on and off as you like; there is no separate ticket. The buses start around 08:00, an hour after the gates open, so the first hour is on foot. From the visitor centre a sensible loop is Panorama first (for the photo of all the pyramids), then Menkaure, Khafre, the Great Pyramid, and the Sphinx last.
Tours use the same buses: the private car waits at the visitor centre while your guide rides with you. One guest on the A1 Egypt tour called the hop-on hop-off buses "very convenient" on a site that is "vast".
How do you buy Giza tickets without a guide?
By card at the ticket office or online at egymonuments.com: 700 EGP for the plateau, plus 1,500 EGP if you want to go inside the Great Pyramid.
Cash hasn't been accepted since June 2023. Bring a Visa or Mastercard that works abroad; Amex is unreliable. Students need a valid student ID (age 24 or under) for the 350 EGP rate. If you want the Great Pyramid, buy that ticket at the same time, early: numbers are limited.
The only official online seller is the Ministry's portal, egymonuments.com. Every price is in the tickets and prices guide.

How do you deal with touts and fake guards at Giza?
Don't stop for anyone before the ticket office, agree every price in writing, and say "no, thank you" once and keep walking.
- The fake guard: a man in a uniform-ish jacket says the entrance is closed or "this way" and leads you to a stable. The ticket office is never inside a stable.
- The per-person trick: a camel price quoted per camel turns out to be per person, or per 10 minutes.
- The cheap ride out: the ride to the dunes is cheap; the ride back is not.
- The photo tip: someone takes your phone for a great shot, then wants paying for it.
- The free gift: a scarf or a trinket pressed into your hand is never free.
Since 2025 the camel and horse operators work from designated zones away from the entrances, and things are calmer than they were. Calmer, not gone: one guest whose guide left them alone for a stretch wrote that they were "just mobbed by people trying to sell us stuff. One of the purposes of a personal guide is to prevent that."

What does a guide add, and what does it cost you?
A guide handles the card-only gate and the queues, keeps touts away and explains what you're looking at. The hidden cost is the shopping stops many tours add.
What reviewers value most is protection and context. On A1 Egypt's tour, a guest wrote that the guide "protected us from hagglers. Often intervening when they could see someone taking advantage of the group." On the full day, another said they "quickly entered the Giza Necropolis without be hounded by scammers". And a good Egyptologist turns stones into a story, which is the thing you can't buy at the gate.
The cost is shopping. Papyrus, perfume, cotton, carpets and alabaster stops show up again and again in reviews. One guest counted six shops on a full day and said "at least 2 hours of your time is wasted in these shops." On a private tour you can refuse them. Say so at pickup, politely and clearly, and most guides drop them.

Barely. A round trip by Uber plus the ticket comes to about $20 to $25; the cheapest private guide and car plus the ticket comes to about $25 before tips.
Per person, one adult, plateau ticket only, at about 55 EGP to the dollar:
| Way to go | Transport | Guide | Ticket | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| On your own | Uber both ways, 300 to 600 EGP ($6 to $11) | None | 700 EGP ($13) | About $19 to $24 |
| Driver only, the $7 option | Car waits all day | None | 700 EGP ($13) | About $20 |
| Budget private guide, The Egyptian King | Hotel pickup, car waits | Yes | 700 EGP ($13) | About $25 plus tip |
| Private Egyptologist, Misk Tours | Hotel pickup, car waits | Yes | 700 EGP ($13) | About $43 plus tip |
A couple sharing an Uber pays less per head than the table shows; private tours price per person by group size too, so check the total at checkout. The difference isn't the money. It is whether you want someone else handling the gate, the touts and the explaining.
Our pick if you want a real Egyptologist: private, four to five hours, from $30 plus the gate ticket.

A bank card for tickets, small Egyptian notes for tips and toilets, water, a hat, sunscreen and shoes with grip. There is little shade on the plateau.
Which day is best to visit Giza?
Sunday to Thursday; Tuesday and Wednesday are quietest. Friday and Saturday are the Egyptian weekend and the busiest days. Arrive at 07:00 whatever the day.
Can I walk between the pyramids?
