Two pyramids at Giza are open inside in late 2026: the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Khafre. The third, Menkaure, closed for maintenance on 11 September 2026 under the antiquities council's rotation system, with no reopening date given.
Each interior is a separate ticket on top of the 700 EGP plateau entry. The Great Pyramid costs 1,500 EGP, about $27, and it is the one most people mean when they ask about going inside. Here is what you see, how physical it is, and how to get it into a tour.
The quick answer
Yes, you can go inside the Great Pyramid in 2026: 1,500 EGP (about $27) on top of the 700 EGP plateau ticket, 30 to 45 minutes, through a passage about 1.2 m high to an empty granite chamber. Khafre reopened on 11 September 2026 for a few hundred pounds; Menkaure is closed. Skip both if you have bad knees, a bad back or claustrophobia. Go at opening time, before the heat and the queues.
Can you go inside the pyramids at Giza in 2026?
Yes, two of them. The Great Pyramid and the Pyramid of Khafre are open; the Pyramid of Menkaure has been closed since 11 September 2026.
The Supreme Council of Antiquities rotates the pyramid interiors to give each one a rest. On 11 September 2026 it closed Menkaure for routine maintenance and reopened Khafre. No end date was announced, so plan on Menkaure staying shut for this season. The news, and what it means for tours sold with a "third pyramid" option, is in our post on the closure.
The smaller queens' pyramids and the Tomb of Meresankh III (200 EGP) are other ways underground, if the main interiors are full.

How much does it cost to go inside the Great Pyramid?
1,500 EGP, about $27, for a foreign adult, on top of the 700 EGP plateau ticket. Students pay about 750 EGP.
Buy it at the plateau ticket office or online on egymonuments.com, by card. Numbers inside are limited, and in peak season the early slots go first. The old Ministry monument page still lists 1,000 EGP; that page is out of date, and two Viator operators state 1,500 EGP in their October 2026 listings.
The Great Pyramid is extra on almost every tour, even on the all-inclusive days. Misk Tours and GEM Explore Egypt say so in their exclusions, and a guest on the VIP full day wrote: "The great pyramid entrance was not included but the guide showed us where to get the tickets and waited till we finished."
Eight options, from car and guide to an all-inclusive with the Great Pyramid ticket: choose before you go.

A climb through the Robbers' Tunnel, the low Ascending Passage and the Grand Gallery to the King's Chamber, a bare granite room with an empty sarcophagus.
- The Robbers' Tunnel: the way in, a rough passage cut into the north face long after the pyramid was sealed, traditionally credited to the caliph al-Ma'mun.
- The Ascending Passage: about 1.2 m high and sloping at about 26 degrees. You go up bent double on boards with cross-slats.
- The Grand Gallery: the passage suddenly rises into a corbelled roof about 8.6 m high. This is the moment people remember.
- The King's Chamber: plain red granite walls and a lidless granite sarcophagus. No paintings, no hieroglyphs.
Allow 30 to 45 minutes. There are no wall paintings anywhere in the route, so the experience is the climb and the scale, not decoration. Phone photos are free on the plateau, but guards often stop photos in the passages.

Is going inside the Great Pyramid hard or claustrophobic?
It is physical and close. You walk bent over for long stretches in hot, humid air, and you pass people coming down in the same passage.
Guests are blunt about it. "If you are Claustrophobic save your money and pass up going inside the pyramids! You must also be physically fit to go inside. There is a lot of bending, crouching and even some crawling with inclines and declines." Another on the A1 Egypt tour: "caution that this is not suitable for anyone who has any breathing difficulties/ issues with confined spaces/ problems with knees".
Skip it with heart trouble, bad knees, a bad back or a fear of tight spaces. GEM Explore Egypt's listing says outright that the tour is not recommended for travellers with back problems. Wear shoes with grip, leave the big bag with your guide or in the car, and take water for afterwards.
Is it worth going inside the Great Pyramid?
For most fit visitors, yes, once. Reviewers who went in rarely regret it, though plenty say there is "nothing to see" in the chamber itself.
The reviews split along one line: people who wanted the experience loved it, people who wanted sights were let down. One guest: "Going inside the was hot and cramp but worth it." Another: "It is incredibly hot inside the pyramid with nothing really to see." Both are true. You pay $27 to stand inside a 4,500-year-old structure, not to look at art.
Our take: if you are only at Giza once and your body is up to it, go in. If you are on the fence, Khafre gives you most of the feeling for a fraction of the price, and the money saved buys the Grand Egyptian Museum, where the decoration is.

Pick the option with the Great Pyramid ticket already in it, and the guide sorts the card-only gate and the queue.

A passage down into the bedrock to a plain burial chamber about 14 m long with a gabled limestone roof and a granite sarcophagus. It costs a few hundred pounds, about 200 to 300 EGP.
Khafre's interior goes down before it goes along, so there is less climbing than in Khufu's and no Grand Gallery. The chamber is cut into the rock, with a pointed roof of limestone slabs. Giovanni Belzoni broke in in 1818, found the sarcophagus empty and painted his name on the wall, where it still is.
Prices quoted in 2026 range from 100 to 280 EGP, because the interior reopened only in September; expect a few hundred pounds, still a fraction of the Great Pyramid. It is the open alternative to Menkaure, which means it is also what you should ask for if your tour option promises the "third pyramid".

Which Giza tours include going inside a pyramid?
Only specific options: A1 Egypt's "inside great pyramid" options, The Egyptian King's all-inclusive with one interior, and the "third pyramid" options that now need rechecking.
- Private Giza tour with interiors (from $15): options include "All incl & inside great pyramid", "GEM, pyramids & great pyramid", "inside great and third pyramid" and "All incl & inside 3rd pyramid". The last two were built around Menkaure.
- Budget private Giza tour (from $12): the "All inclusive & inside pyramid" option adds entry, a koshary or falafel lunch, one interior and a 15-minute camel ride. Ask which pyramid.
- Private Giza with camel and lunch (from $14) and the VIP full day ($155): both list entry to the "third pyramid". With Menkaure shut, ask whether you get Khafre instead.
- Memphis Tours pyramids and GEM ($185): entry fees included, interiors excluded.
Send the question in writing before you pay, and keep the answer. A tour that promised two interiors and delivered one is a common complaint: "we were supposed to go inside 2 pyramids, but she only took us to 1".
The cheapest guide and car at Giza, with an all-inclusive option that adds an interior and lunch.
Check dates for the budget private Giza tourWhen is the best time to go inside the Great Pyramid?
At opening, 07:00, or as close to it as your tour allows. The passages fill and heat up once the coach groups arrive around 09:00.
A guest who took a later pickup warned: "to go inside the Greta pyramid it is very very hot and crowded at those times [...]" Another who chose an 08:00 start said the guide "got us in the pyramids before the lines".
Avoid Fridays and Saturdays, the Egyptian weekend, when local families make the plateau busiest. Tuesday and Wednesday are the quietest. In Ramadan the site opens at 08:00 and last entry is 15:30. The cooler months, October to April, make the climb a lot more bearable than the 35 C days of June to August.

Frequently asked questions
Can children go inside the Great Pyramid?
There is no official age limit, but the passage is steep and hot. Guests have taken school-age children in; carrying a toddler bent double is hard work. Khafre is the easier interior.
Can you take photos inside the pyramids?
Phone photography is free on the plateau, but guards often stop photos in the Great Pyramid's passages. Tripods and commercial filming need a permit.
Is the solar boat still next to the Great Pyramid?
No. Khufu's boat was moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the old boat museum beside the pyramid has closed.
When will Menkaure reopen?
No date has been announced. The antiquities council rotates the interiors for maintenance; check before you travel, and ask your operator which pyramid you will enter.
